Scale, Impact, and Craft

Two days ago, I spent my valentine at Richard B.

It’s a restaurant with only two tables. It sits in an experimental art gallery within a mid-century modern house. The evening was filled with tasty food, wine, beautiful dinnerware, ambient light, electrical music, two lovely kittens, and pleasant conversation with the host.

During the 4 hrs, I forget where I was, which decade I was in, or even, which planet I am at. It’s one of the out-of-the-world experiences I’ve ever encountered.

By the end of the dinner, chef Alex came out and said hi. We thanked her for the food and hosting, and she said hi in her thick accent. By the end of our conversation, a thought came to me. She will likely forget who I am in a few days, but I will remember this evening my entire life. In the tech industry, we often talk about impact and scale. Yet I am seeing numerous apps and products being created that have a superficial impact on the people they serve. What I just experienced is the opposite.

Each day, chef Alex will wake up, and dedicated her craft to this work. By the end of the day, she knows a few souls on this earth will have a meal they will never forget.

What a wonderful craft to dedicate your time and energy to.
